Shotokan Karate is taught using traditional and cultural Japanese methods. In order to maintain the discipline and respect you will achieve by learning Karate you must follow the Dojo rules and etiquette.

You must apply to the K.U.G.B. for a license after 3 lessons.

Bow on entering and leaving the Dojo.

Address all Instructors as "Sensei" whilst in the Dojo.
"OSS" is a sign of respect and is generally used in Karate , especially in the following situations:

Upon receiving any advice or command from the Instructor, the student must reply by answering "OSS"

When bowing at the start and finish of the class.

When bowing to your partner during Kumite.

In any other appropriate situation, for instance during Gradings or Competitions.

Members must NOT leave the class without first obtaining permission from the Sensei.

Members arriving late, must take a kneeling position at the front of the Dojo and await permission from the Instructor before joining the class, on receiving permission, bow and then join the class.

Outdoor shoes must not be worn in the Dojo, if you do bring them in they must be placed around the edge of the Dojo. (Permission must be given by an Instructor to wear shoes in the Dojo for any reason)

When lining up students must always line up in order of grade. The Lining up should be done quickly and with the minimum of fuss.

Members must train at least twice a week where possible.

Tell your instructor if you have an injury before training.

Tell your instructor if you must leave early before training.

Karate Gi's must be kept clean and in good condition.

Finger and Toe nails must be kept short and clean, and free of nail varnish.

Jewellery or similar must not be worn during training, if you cannot remove jewellery then it must be covered with tape.

Makeup must not be worn.

Never bring food or drinks into the Dojo unless permitted to do so by an Instructor.

Never use your Karate skills outside of the Dojo (except for self defence or the defence of other within the law).

Members must not swear, chew, spit or commit any other act likely to offend the Dojo etiquette.

Members MUST NOT use their karate skills in any OFFENSIVE way outside the Dojo.

Silly behaviour and idle chat will not be tolerated during the lesson, on entering the Dojo, sit or stand quietly, or practice Kata until the session starts.

BULLYING of any kind ( actual or verbal) by students to anyone will not be tolerated and could lead to expulsion from the club.

RESPECT must be given to all Instructors, whatever their age who have achieved Black Belt status, or any other high grade student which the Sensei's have appointed to teach.

Questions must be addressed to the Instructors only! They will give you the correct information you require. Members must show respect for higher grades. They are your Sempei

Mobile Phones and Personal MP3 players must be switched OFF before you enter the Dojo. If for any reason you have to keep your mobile phone ON you must get permission from your Sensei.

PLEASE USE THE TOILET BEFORE THE LESSON! Unless you have a medical reason for constant use, Please make sure your Sensei's are aware of this.
